Warrington Wolves vs Wigan Warriors Match Report

This was a big performance by Warrington Wolves as home fans chanted that familiar song "this is our year". For once supporters of other clubs may well begin to believe that rhetoric as Blake Austin, Stefan Ratchford, Darryl Clarke and Ben Currie look a very useful spine to that team.

Indeed
Warrington inflicted a fourth straight defeat on defending champions Wigan to move up to second in Super League with a total domination in the first half hour ,with scores from Jake Mamo, Stefan Ratchford and Josh Charnley.  More that that, the Wolves look like a team with spirit and passion, and with over 13,000 in attendance this is a club on the move.

Josh Charnleys score was particularly impressive as he capitalized on poor defending from Morgan Escare to gather Blake Austin's high kick and squeeze inspectacularly at the corner. Few wingers do it better than Charnley as he dominated the Frenchman most of the night.

Tom Davies and Willie Isa mounted the attack for wigan with Isa judging his run to perfection as George Williams flirted with Warringtons defensive line. Jake Shorrocks also showed up well in his first wigan appearance in two years and provided a superb grubber for Tom Davies to finish.

Declan Pattons Drop goal from close range may well have looked decisive and a full on fight involving several players resulted in a forlorn looking Benny Westwood walking to the red card.

There is no doubting this was a hard nosed and frantic Wigan effort with plenty of passion for coach Adrian Lam to seek solace in. In the final stages Jack Hughes powered over from close range as Warrington mount a realistic challenge for the Top of the Super league table.

For Warrington Darryl Clarke and Stefan Ratchford were outstanding and Blake Austin is a player improving with every game. For the Visitors Zak Hardaker was at times superb ably supported by a strong Bench with Joe Bullock and Oliver Partington impressive.
