NRL Preview: Thursday night football

Brisbane Broncos vs St George Illawarra Dragons.
Suncorp Stadium, 8:05pm AEST.

Round 3 kicks off with Thursday night footy where the Brisbane Broncos host the St George Illawarra Dragons at Suncorp Stadium.

The Broncos will head into this game as clear favourites after getting their season up and running last week against the Cowboys. Round 1 showed a weakness for the Broncos, and that’s their halves pairing who still seem to be a bit to on/off at times. While it was a let down week one, it seemed to of been a no issue week two.

The Broncos halves consistently will be a big factor going on throughout the season. However what seemed to be a good sign so far, was the forward pack. The forwards continue to go strong, and young gun Tevita Pangai Junior seems to be an early push for prop of the year. The Broncos will need this and some clear consistently out of their halves, because the Dragons won’t be a walk over team.

St George Illawarra head into this game with a disappointing 0-2 record. Sure they played a tough Cowboys side and a premiership favourite Rabbitohs side, but the issue seems to be clear at the Dragons, and that’s their spine.

Continuing to chase the idea of Gareth Widdop in the fullback position is something Mary sticks by, but is it the right move? Dufty was a clear favourite at the club in the fullback role, and most believe he should be wearing that #1 jersey, but not only that, it takes away from Widdop as a half, who we all know is top five when he’s on. I think this could be a final tester for the new spine. Without dramatic change, we could very well... see change.

The way we see it: At Suncorp it’s hard to go past the Broncos. They seem to be in a better position than the Dragons, and have it a little more figured out. Not to mention, at home they are tough to beat. Broncos by 12.
