Thurston gets his rightful farewell

North Queensland Cowboys 30 defeat Gold Coast Titans 26.

Match Review:
Well there we go, the final game of Johnathan Thurston’s career, and what a way to end it all.

The Titans got off to a flyer through fullback Alexander Brimson. Some early field possession domination and a slow start by the Cowboys invited the Titans into the Cowboys half, and Brimson got his team going with his fast footwork as he sliced through the defence to score the try.

Kane Elgey extended the lead not long after also on a piece of individual brilliance. Once again the field positions was flowing for the Titans and the momentum was just flowing all for the home side. As a set play came the way of Elgey, he was able to dummy and grubber his way through the line before diving on his own grubber for the 4 pointer.

The dummy half play from both teams was on song as both had a huge influence in their teams next try. North Queensland were able to fight their way back into the game when hooker Jake Granville popped a short pass to Shaun Fensom close to the line who barge stormed his way over under the posts. The Titans responded through their bench hooker Mitch Rein when he caught the markers slacking off on their own goal line and dived over from dummy half to give his team a 18-6 lead going into the sheds for half time.

The second half started perfectly for the Cowboys and brought them straight back into the game. An attacking set right on the Titans line went down to the 5th tackle and saw the great man himself put a cross field chip in over to Gela-Mosby. The kick didn’t go to play, but was allowed to bounce straight into the Cowboys winger’s hand who offloaded to his fullback for Ben Hampton to score in the corner.

A Titans penalty goal helped the home side extend their lead out to 8 points, but it wasn’t to be the case for to long. The Titans were losing the momentum, and a few errors gave the Cowboys  excellent field position. As Jake Granville went out to the left, the dummy runners drew in the defence enough for John Asiata to take on the line with the ball before going out to back to find Ben Hampton for his quick double.

With the clock winding down to single digit minutes left, Thurston pulled off a magic kick to give the Cowboys the lead. With the Cowboys forwards on a roll and forcing the Titans into horrible kicking position, the opportunity to take the lead finally came off a charged down kick attempt. The Cowboys were able to force their way into a beautiful attacking position, and with the offensive not really going anywhere, Thurston put up a cross field chip to Gavin Cooper who pulled the kick in and scored the try, the Cowboys were fighting hard for JT!

The Cowboys win was sealed only a few minutes later when the Titans went on the attack and Titans half Ash Taylor went down the right side and attempted a cut out pass only to find the hands of the Cowboys winger Gela-Mosby who raced off down field to score the try. The Titans were able to grab a consolation try to finish the game when a right side attack sent Anthony Don racing down field before passing back to Brenko Lee who scored the try, but it was all she wrote as the legend got his fitting farewell with a 30-26 win.
