Leeds Fend Off Widnes

Widnes Vikings have a significant losing run which has at times bred apathy and lack of effort but this was a strong and at times passionate display although the end result was not what Widnes fans want.
Just to start on some positives for both teams Widnes have some outstanding young talent in Joe Lyons and Owen Buckley and the abilities of Olly Ashall Bott and Danny Walker have already been highlighted.
It’s common knowledge that the mighty Rhinos have gone through a difficult patch but they also have some exceptional young players like Jack Walker and Harry Newman ( not playing today ). With the announcement that David Furner is to be coach next season this will be met with a sigh of relief from Leeds fans.
Onto the game and coach Francis Cummins played his final hand with seven changes from last week. Youngster Joe Lyons was handed his debut and he showed up really well. Charlie Gubb, Sam Wilde, Owen Buckley, Liam Finn, Jay Chapplehow and Danny Walker all returned to the seventeen.
Much of the first half was tense with two equally matched teams. Widnes born Joe Lyons is another product of the Vikings youth structure and he produced a confident display. Strapping winger Owen Buckley also missed out on a score when stepped his way over the whitewash only to be brought back for a forward pass.
First score however came from the visitors when Richie Myler seized on a loose ball to put in winger Luke Briscoe from 60 meters out. The winger has pace to burn and is really an excellent signing for the Rhinos .
Widnes hit back with a Tom Olbison too strong in a one on one situation and he plunged over for the four. Krisnan Inu was successful with the conversion and Widnes had a deserving 6-4 half time lead.
Into the second half and it was all Widnes with first Krisnan Inu just missing out of a high Liam Finn ball and then Inu again almost scoring a second. Those misses would cost Widnes the game.
For Leeds is was a significant defensive effort until eventually Matt Parcell hit back with a try after a superb Liam Sutcliffe 40/20.
It was a really close game all the way, tough , uncompromising and both teams displaying a credible determination . Richie Myler however sealed the victory near the end and this was a very hard fought victory for the Rhinos .
Widnes fans can at least applaud the effort from their team and Leeds will surely need 3 or 4 new players for next season .
