Dragons spoil old boys day with a 24-14 victory

Newcastle playing on old boys day is always a hard task for teams in the last round of the regular season but this week it’s an even hard task for the Dragons who were struggling to find form heading into the finals.

Dragons opened the scoring through a penalty goal to Zac Lomax early in the 7th minute. Dragons lead 2-0.

Knights scored the first try of the match through winger Ken Sio in the 11th minute. The try couldn’t be converted and Knights lead 4-2.

The Dragons squandered a couple of opportunities to score tries but Newcastle jumped on an opportunity late in ge first half through Shaun Kenny-Dowall. Nick Meaney converted from practically in front and Knights lead 10-2.

Newcastle went into the halftime break with a 10-2 lead on Old Boys Day.

The Dragons needed to start the second half strong and that’s exactly what they did when Jeremy Latimore crashed over for the away side and with Lomax converting the Knights kept a narrow 10-8 lead.

The Dragons would be the next to score again when Kurt Mann created something from nothing and after a couple of offloads Nene MacDonald races away to score in the corner. Lomax converted from the sideline and the Dragons hit the front 14-10.

The Dragons went into defensive mode protecting their slim lead but they finally broke through the Knights line off the back of a poor Mitchell Pearce pass the Meaney knocked on and Hunt swooped on it and after a few passes between Dragons players trying to find their fastest player Matt Dufty eventually got the ball and raced away and scored. Zac Lomax misses the conversion. Dragons 18-10.

The game wasn’t over yet when Mitchell Pearce chopped to the corner and with a very lucky bounce Ken Sio collected the ball and scored in the corner. Nick Meaney failed to convert from the sideline. Dragons lead 18-14.

St George Illawarra Dragons sealed the win off the back of another Knights error after Jordan Periera swooped on the ball and ran 20m to score in the corner. Zac Lomax slots the conversions from the sideline. Dragons 24-14.

Full time siren blew a minute later and Dragons spoiled the Knights old boys day with a 24-14 win.
