Dragons Run Warriors Close

This was a much closer game than anticipated as an under strength Catalan Dragons pushed Wigan all the way in this Friday Evening encounter at the DW stadium .

Indeed the Dragons opened the scoring when experienced winger Jodie Broughton got on the end of a kick with Lucas Albert converting for Catalan to take an early 6-0 advantage.

Wigan replies after 15 minutes when Chris Hankinson demonstrated how well he has adapted to super League. The former Swinton three Quarter got onto the end of a high ball from Sam Tomkins with the full back converting .

In an eventful few minutes Young Josh Woods managed to save a score followed by injuries to Leuluai and Hankinson obtained in the tackle.

Tomkins took the two points from a penalty kick on the half hour and after a scuffle close to half time the dangerous Kenny Edwards was dismissed after being embroiled in some handbags at five paces with John Bateman.

With the Dragons down to twelve men Wigan took advantage early in the second half when French international Morgan Escare scored under the post with Tomkins adding the two .

With Tomkins showing a touch of class again a few minutes later he proved he is still a quality player with a nice try which he converted himself to give Wigan a 20-8 lead .

The Dragons were not out of this game however with Da Costa and Yaha getting over the Wigan line with some good play from former Wigan man Iain Thorniley .

Albert added the two with his third conversion to take Catalan within two points of the home team at 20-18, and then on 67 minutes it was all square at 20-20 when Albert took the two from a penalty .

Wigan supporters may well have been thinking that stronger performances were required at this stage of the season and with eight minutes to go Sam Tomkins took a one pointer to give Wigan the most slender of Leads.

Wigan did however manage to seal the game with a score from Joe Greenwood and at 25-20 the victory was at best unconvincing and at worst worrying for a team that appear to have lost all direction in recent weeks.

Shaun Wane needs to sit down and re assess where this season is heading if he is not to leave the club empty handed at the end of the year, while one imagines that Catalan coach Steve McNamarra will be fairly pleased with this second half effort.

Where it not for the dismissal of Edwards the Dragons could well have taken this game,
