Chumpie's Corner: Billy Slater Edition

One of the legends of Queensland Rugby League has now retired, left the number 1 for Kalyn Ponga to make his own. He was one of the best in game 2 this Origin series, and a threat throughout in game 3. However, Valentine Holmes was better in the series than Slater. I can name at least 4 New South Wales players who were better than Billy Slater. So how the hell did Slater win the Wally Lewis Medal for player of the series?

Well, like I said, he retired. The build up was about one thing, two different stories as we went into Suncorp Stadium on Wednesday night. Would Slater go out as a winning captain or would New South Wales get out the dusty brooms and complete the clean sweep? It was not about Slater being anywhere near the Wally Lewis Medal that should have gone to someone like Boyd Cordner or James Tedesco. Hell, as I NSW supporter I would have been okay with Valentine Holmes getting the medal based off how he played this series.

You can't be the player of the series if you don't play all three games unless you single-handedly win both games. Slater did not do that. Munster was fantastic for Queensland, Holmes was brilliant out wide. Damien Cook made 141 tackles in 3 games. Tedesco was always threatening throughout this series. Josh Addo-Carr brutalized and terrorized the Queensland defense all series, so HOW DID SLATER WIN THE DAMN MEDAL!

Laurie Daley and Darren Lockyer made that choice. You could tell on Billy Slater's face that he wasn't expecting that to say the least. I can understand the logic behind having Australian selectors choosing the award recipient, but they got it wrong this time. It is really hard to talk up the game when the wrong players get the awards. This is another example.

Chumpie out.
