Round 5 Review: Raiders v Bulldogs

Canberra Raiders 26 defeat Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs 10.

This was a game I was excited for, and boy it was exciting from the get go!

With the late exclusion on Jack Wighton due to his wife going into labour, it didn’t stop the Raiders from coming out of the block hard and fast, desperate to make a statement and grab their first win of 2018! It took just 10 minutes for the Raiders to get on the scoreboard after an Aaron Woods dropped ball was picked up by interim fullback Nick Cotric in goal handed to Jordan Rapana and sent flying down the sideline before being stopped 10 metres out. It didn’t take long after that for the Raiders to score as the very next play saw Joseph Leilua pick it up out of dummy half and storm over the line. Was only 5 minutes later when we saw a cross field kick by Aiden Sezer get tapped back by Rapana to Leilua who dove over in the corner to collect a quick double in the opening 15 minutes. The game from there on out was quite the grind! Leilua had the opportunity to grab a first half hat trick but dropped it over the line. The final 25 minutes were scoreless but full of injury drama as the Bulldogs lost winger Brett Morris for the game before the Raiders lost bench hooker Ata Hingano and winger Michael Oldfield. All gone due to failed HIA tests. The Raiders led 12-0 going into halftime.

The Bulldogs started the second half much better, coming from 12-0 down to grab their opening try thanks to star recruit Kieran Foran storming over to bring the Dogs back into the game. The second half didn’t start well for the Raiders. A bombed try by Elliott Whitehead, a conceded try, and then losing halfback Sam Williams for the remainder of the game from a suspected knee injury. A quick fire try however from Jarrod Croker off a Sezer corner chip gave the home team the 12 point lead again but with only 14 players for the remainder of the game. Croker grabber himself a quick double off yet again another Sezer kick to the corner. The shuffle from centre to the wing saw Croker grab two tries and give the Raiders a 16 point lead with 15 minutes remaining. The remainder of the game was pretty much a grind bar two Croker penalty goals, a late cancelation try for Bulldogs centre Josh Morris and the HIA check of Aiden Sezer which saw the Raiders finish the game with only the 13 players on the field and no half for the final 2 minutes. Despite the injuries, the Raiders came away with the win and finally get their 2018 campaign on track.
