Knights tame Tigers in Tamworth

Newcastle Knights 22 defeat Wests Tigers 20.

Game Review.
It was a highly anticipated clash between the Wests Tigers and Newcastle Knights up in Tamworth for it’s first ever club game which saw 10,000 fans come out to enjoy the game!

The Knights came out of the sheds strong with a multitude of penalties conceded by the Tigers to give the Knights early dominance. A missed penalty goal off the post for Knights fullback Kalyn Ponga let the Tigers off early, but it wasn’t long until the light footed fullback struck. A between through the hands play followed up with a brilliant pass over the top by Ponga saw Ken Sio grab the 4 pointer and get the Knights on the board.

The game for a while there went back and forth, both teams conceding penalties and losing out on scoring opportunities. However through the brilliance of Mitchell Pearce, the Knights went over again. A dummy and straight through the line saw the halfback score a try and give the Knights a 10-0 lead. The Tigers had their opportunities to score, but for the first time in 15 years, the Knights held them scoreless at half time.

The second half saw a completely different Tigers team. Straight off the bat the Tigers upped the intensity and pressure and finally it paid off the Tigers. Luke Brooks took on the line and hit Michael Chee-Kam with a short ball to send him through the line and score the Tigers first which opened up the flood gates. A few plays later a Benji Marshall bomb dropped by Knights winger Shaun Kenny-Dowall was picked up and taken over the line by Tigers centre Kevin Naiqama to get the Tigers the lead. Once again through the dominance of the ruck, the Tigers went over again thanks to a Benji Marshall chip over the top for Corey Thompson to score! The run finally ended when an error by the Tigers gave the Knights good position in which Ken Sio went over in the corner untouched.

With 10 minutes remaining in the game, a beautiful through the hands play gave Ken Sio a hat trick and bring the Knights within 2 points. With time ticking away and Mitchell Pearce off for a HIA, the Knights took the lead in the final two minutes through Shaun Kenny-Dowall off a Jamie Buhrer to give the Knights the win in Tamworth!
