Round 3 Review: Gold Coast Titans vs St. George Illawara Dragons

St. George Illawarra Dragons 54 defeat Gold Coast Titans 8

Game Review:

The Gold Coast Titans were pumped up being able to bring a home game to Toowoomba, the hometown of their superstar halfback Ash Taylor. However that excitement disappeared pretty soon after when Titans half Kane Elgey did his best Ben Hunt impersonation by dropping the catch from the kick off. Within the first attacking set Matt Dufty strolled through the Titans line to open the scoring within the first 2 minutes.

The Dragons took advantage of the slow start by the Titans and took the chance at another 2 points courtesy of a Titans penalty. The Titans were quick to respond however, a beautiful short ball close to the line by Ash Taylor gave Michael Gordon an easy try and got the Titans going. Michael Gordon then took advantage of a penalty given by the Dragons and evened the score up at 8 all with roughly 20 minutes remaining in the first half.

The final 20 minutes of the first half was dominated by the Dragons. A kick out on the full by Ash Taylor gave the Dragons three quick tries all via the Dufty and Lafai show! Firstly a barge storming effort by Tim Lafai, then the duo stormed down the sideline to help Dufty grab his second, and finally the pair once again came flying down the left side to give Lafai his second of the day. The Dragons took a convincing 26-8 lead into the sheds at half time.

The second half saw the Titans come out firing! A couple of repeat sets in the Dragons half within the first 5 minutes resulted in Jack De Bellin getting sent for 10 minutes in the bin for a professional foul to stop a Titans try. A play that ended up working a treat as the Titans failed to capitalize off the back of the advantage.

The Dragons managed to extend their lead during that 10 minute period from a Widdop penalty goal. It was then followed up with a kick out on the full from the kick off that gave the Dragons beautiful field position which they took advantage of thanks to another Nene MacDonald howler in the corner! The game was then deemed completely over when Ben Hunt broke through the Titans defence, and put a chip over the top of the fullback for Gareth Widdop to score a try of the year candidate!

Gareth Widdop topped off a man of the match performance with a grubber through for Paul Vaughan to dive on, followed up with a line break and chip over the top for Matt Dufty to grab a hat trick. Tim Lafai then picked up his hat trick thanks to yours truly Gareth Widdop, summing up one of the best individual performances I’ve ever seen!

The Dragons now go 3-0 to start the season and are looking incredibly dominate! Title contender maybe?! Next week will be interesting to see, The last the the Dragons started a season 4-0 was in 2010, In which they won the Competition.

Stonecold’s Man Of The Match: Gareth Widdop.
