Dragons vs Broncos review

St George Illawarra Dragons 34 defeat Brisbane Broncos 12.

Game Review:
Was a very sloppy start to the season, with both teams guilty of making many handling errors and giving away plenty of penalties. The sloppy start resulted in a 4-2 scoreline in favour of the Dragons from three converted penalties. However it was the Dragons who picked their game up and got us the opening try for 2018 thanks to a cheeky Ben Hunt grubber in goal dived on by Tyson Frizell. The remainder of the first half was dominated by the Dragons, but the Broncos defence stood strong resulting in a 10-2 scoreline heading in the sheds.

The second half was much more action packed, and dominated mainly by the Dragons! The Broncos scored quickly in the second half thanks to James Roberts, but a wayward pass thrown by the Broncos new recruit Matt Lodge saw Ben Hunt steam away and grab the four pointer against his old side!

The game was assumed over when Euan Aitken showed his power to steam through two defenders and give the Dragons a big lead, but once again the Broncos were kept alive when James Roberts grabbed his second try of the game. However it wasn’t long until the game was officially deemed over thanks to a powerful run by Jack De Bellin to get the Dragons the win.

A late diving try in the corner to Jason Nightingale officially finished the game off, as we saw the Dragons run away with the two competition points, taking the win over the Broncos 34-12.

Key Point: Dragons Spine.
Straight off the bat Widdop and Hunt showed their efficiency together! The pair did look a bit shaky to start with, but from the 20th minute onwards, the duo were on fire and completely dominated the game. The kicking from both was exceptional, and the influence made by the pair was highly visible in the Dragons offence.

Although all the cameras were on the halves, hooker Cameron McInnes and fullback Matt Dufty did their job very well. McInnes was defensively sound, and was brilliant with ball in hands, making up plenty of metres running the ball and finding the holes.

Matt Dufty looked good in the fullback position, the young gun was safe under the high ball, was strong bringing the ball back from the kick, and looked very dangerous when running and passing the ball. Between the four, it’s safe to say the Dragons deserve to be excited over their dangerous spine. The Dragons are definitely my 2018 smokey!
