RLATG Exclusive: New York Will Play Championship 1 In 2019

Rugby League Around The Grounds can exclusively reveal that the RLF have provisionally approved the application of the New York based side to join England's Championship 1 in 2019.

The application was submitted with a business plan that the RLF deemed fit for purpose, their will be a final review late in 2018, to see if the provided criteria has been met by the club.

New York will join in a similar fashion to Toronto, expected to work their way up in the domestic rankings and eventually push for Super League, this is the RLF's latest plan to boost the profile of the sport ahead of the 2025 World Cup in the US.

New York will have substantial financial backing, again very similar to Toronto, and will most likely be playing Championship Rugby League in 2020, however we are now faced with the possibility of Toronto and New York being in the same league, which will put an extreme financial burden on the sport.

We will have to wait and see what the future holds, all we know right now, is that New York will be joining the English game.

  1. How will this put a financial burden on the sport? Both teams are self funded, and I know for a fact that Toronto pays for travel and accommodation for all visiting teams, and will continue to do so until they reach Super League. I'd assume New York has a similar model in place.

    1. But they'll send no away support

    2. Relying on away support us a very flawed business model. I'd expect these games to attract more home fans and neutrals though.
