We Need Bennett

It's strange to feel half satisfied with a loss, especially if that loss is a final. The performance was the best I have seen of an England outfit, but how? Pre-World Cup everyone was saying the same thing, the coach is wrong, the team is wrong, we are going to take a battering.

Bennett took England within 6 points of Australia, Bennett coached a nation that has underachieved on the big stage and took them to within such a slim margin of beating Australia in a World Cup final.

Amidst news that he is linked with the New Zealand job, many players have urged the Super-coach to stay. I would too, I'll admit I was sceptical at first, but I gave him a chance and he is clearly by a country mile the best man for this job.

If you think about it, in just his first year as coach he has ended a 22 year hiatus from World Cup finals and brought us to within a cat's whisker of undoubtedly the best Rugby League nation on the planet. Imagine what he could do with another 4 years, 4 years is a lot of time to develop a team, but 4 years and it could see England as number 1 contenders for Australia's crown.

James Graham is the latest player to come out urging Bennett to stay saying "There's a sense of achievement getting to our first final in so long. I'd love Wayne to continue and the job and what he's doing. He's been great for this group and I think that's plain to see. For 80 minutes we were only one score away."

Hopefully Bennett does stick around, if he does, I'm very excited to see the future of England Rugby League.
