Are The Knights Set To Avoid The Spoon?

Newcastle Knights have held the Wooden Spoon for the last 3 seasons in a row. Could 2018 be the year to end the streak?

The Knights have recruited really well for the new season, in hopes of improving in areas that have let them down in previous years.

First off their defence, up and coming NRL star, Kalyn Ponga will take the fullback role. I'm really excited to see Ponga in his first full season, and what he is capable of coming out from the back. Tautau Moga will bring more fire power going forward for the Knights, Moga can play wing or centre, but i would expect to see him run out in the centre next season.

The signing of Mitchell Pearce will really bolster their chances of finals Rugby League, Pearce has even had conditional bonuses written into his contract in the event of them making the finals.

The Knights have recruited plenty of muscle for 2018, Lilleyman(Warriors), Guerra(Roosters), Ese'ese(Broncos), Heightington(Sharks) and Slade Griffin(Storm). These additions, paired with the existing Newcatsle forwards, will create real depth in their pack.

Newcastle have made some good depth signings too. The aforementioned Slade Griffin can play hooker and lock. Connor Watson is an incredibly versatile player, he can slot in anywhere from fullback to halfback and everywhere in between, this will help cover injuries that will occur through the season.

They have lost players through the off season, the most notable absentee of course will be Dane Gagai, who joins the South Sydney Rabbitohs. If this newly formed playing group can gel quickly, then I see no reason why the Knights won't avoid a dreaded 4th spoon. I look forward to seeing how this new look Newcastle look in 2018 and I tip them to finish 10th or better.
