Are PNG NRL Ready?

There has been a lot of talk recently about the potential of a PNG based side joining the NRL in a short while, the real question here is, are they ready?

The PNG Hunters went down a treat in the Intrust Super Cup, they were formed back in 2013 and are set to compete for the 5th time in the competition. They won their first premiership last year, which led to the question "when will they play in the NRL?"

While they did win the Intrust Super Cup in 2017, it's also worth mentioning that they also took a hammering against NSW champions, Penrith 42-18.

I really like the atmosphere and the spirit the Kumuls bring to a game, they are a quality side and having an NRL team with, NRL funding, would be great for developing the game in Papua New Guinea further.

Until that happens though, PNG will continue to lose it's better players to NRL teams. 10 of the Hunters were selected for the 2017 World Cup squad, which just shows the amount of players that play outside Papua New Guinea itself.

To summarise I would like to see a Papua New Guinea based side come into the NRL, but now is not the time. If and when the Hunters are completely dominating the Queensland competition, and then do the double in the state championship year in year out, it could be viable, but at this moment in time it would be counter productive to everything the PNG based side have worked hard for so far.
