Fiji vs USA Preview

The Tomohawk's were the surprise package of the last World Cup, making it all the way to the quarter finals before being dispatched by the champions Australia. The US are a nation that have come on in leaps and bounds, but as far as being a competitive team in The World Cup unfortunately they are still of the pace. No doubt America will go out and really challenge Fiji but before the game has even started everyone has picked a winner.

Fiji: Fiji have a lot of talent and depth in their squad, alongside some real Fijian flyers. Naiqama, Vunivalu and Montoya are no slouches which will give the US real headaches out wide, not to mention the quality they have in the middle of the park. Koroisau had a sensational season with Manly, if he can replicate that form in a Fijian shirt, teams are going to struggle against what is looking like a very competitive Fijian outfit. If Jarryd Hayne can roll back the clock to when he was last playing with Fiji, then he could play a major role in how far Fiji go in the tournament. Gifted the number 6 role Hayne will play the role of a running half, taking on the line, pushing up on the shoulder and hopefully, creating chances.

USA: The underdogs have a few tricks up their sleeve too. Captain Mark Offerdahl is a well seasoned veteran always looking for a gap out of dummy half. Ryan Burroughs is a live wire winger and a very good finisher, currently playing with newly promoted championship side, Toronto. America know that chances will be few and far between if they let Fiji have it all their own way, however this proud nation has not come to Australia to make up the numbers and will not make this game easy for their Fijian opposition.

Conclusion: On paper this game is a four gone conclusion, with Fiji out doing the US man for man. However Rugby League is not a game played on paper, in which anything is possible. On this occasion I firmly believe Fiji have got this game all sown up by 20 clear points. The US will be out in good spirits backed by their expanding fan base. Everyone loves an underdog story, unless at this moment in time you are a Fijian.
